Etymologically, the word periphery can be traced back to its greek origin: to carry something around. In today’s use it designates a growing belt area around a historical city centre. While the centre traditionally symbolizes continuity and political power, the constant state of becoming permits a continuous change. Thus, the motto of the candidature of the city of Essen and the Ruhr area to become the cultural capital of Europe in 2010: „Culture through Change – Change through Culture“ is referring to this connotation. Within this context, the project „Peripherie 3000“ as a strategic platform for networked centres broaches the issue of questioning the idea of periphery within an informal meeting of the Klub Peripherie 3000.
