Center and Periphery

A short story on how we came about "Peripherie 3000" in November 2005 ...

While driving on the highway from Wuppertal (a city with beautiful underground parking facilities) to Dortmund, Stefan Hilterhaus, Susanne Ackers and Inke Arns discussed about the notions of center and periphery. While it was agreed that the Ruhr region clearly is a kind of periphery, culturally speaking, it seems increasingly unclear where the "center" is, whether there is any "center" at all and whether a center is needed at all. Don't things happen in the periphery (first)? Why not found a club called "Periphery 3000"? Develop a huge publicity campaign for this "invisible center"? Does the word "periphery" necessarily, or rather, ontologically, imply the existence of a "center"? Or could we possibly speak of "periphery as center" (mind you: Marius Babias has entitled his 1995 book "In the center of periphery" - "Im Zentrum der Peripherie", Fundus, Dresden!)
